Do low calorie diets actually work?

They can work…until they don’t.

Here’s the truth about weight loss.

You MUST be in a caloric deficit to lose weight.

In other words, if you on average burn 2,000 calories a day by just living your life, you will be in a calorie deficit if you eat less than 2,000 calories. If you do that for long enough, it can help you lose weight.

However, here’s where women who are struggling to lose weight do it wrong:

  1. They’re in a calorie deficit for way too long: this ends up downregulating (i.e. slowing) their metabolism
  2. They do it too drastically (i.e. they decide to cut out 500 or more calories “overnight”)
  3. They focus just on calories, but they don’t focus on where those calories came from (i.e. they focus on eating lower calorie soda, chips, or fast food even though those foods provide no nutritional value)


If you find yourself making one of these mistakes (or have made them in the past), you’re not alone.

Here are some simple ways you can create a calorie deficit so that you can lose weight (without having to deprive or restrict yourself in the process):

  1. Swap out highly processed foods for their whole food counterparts (e.g. instead of french fries, swap it instead for a baked potato)
  2. Replace liquid calorie drinks for fruit-infused water or sparkling soda
  3. Replace your chip/cookie/granola bar snack for fruits, veggies, and a good source of protein
  4. Eat out less
  5. Make more food at home
