A research study was done in 2011 on how the body may react to food if it were labeled as “healthy” or “unhealthy.”
Two groups were given the same exact shake, but one group got a shake that was advertised as “healthy” and low calorie, whereas the other group got a shake that was advertised as “unhealthy” and high calorie.
They then measured the hormone called ghrelin, also known as the “hunger” hormone. (When ghrelin is high, hunger is high. When ghrelin is low, hunger is low.) They found that ghrelin was lowered 3x MORE in the group that had the “fattening” shake, even though both shakes were exactly the same amount of calories!
This goes to show that how you THINK about food can literally ALTER your body’s response to it.
In other words, if you THINK that bag of chips is going to wreck your health goals, your body may create that response. In other words, your body might trigger a bigger spike in insulin, leading to more intense cravings and more hunger later.
On the other hand, if you THINK that bag of chips won’t affect you and if you can keep a positive mindset around it, then your body may produce a totally different response. Blood sugar may not spike as high and your triggers for junk food may not intensify as much.
Takeaway message: Calories alone are not the end all be all when it comes to weight loss or weight gain. How you PERCEIVE those calories and your overall relationship to food can play a major role too!
